    Hi there,
Your site is fabulous. One of the most difficult aspects of learning Greek for me is the verbs. It would be amazing if you guys were able to provide conjugations (perhaps present, past, future, whatever’s most common conversationally) for common verbs. Or, perhaps you know of a web resource that already does this?

    Thanks,
    Jennifer

I know a great web site (www.foundalis.com/lan/greek.htm) where author, Harry Foundalis, discusses Greek language rules. He has a unique way to explain how to conjugate common Greek verbs so that it would far less confusing for a learner of Greek. So, consult his web site before you read any Greek grammar book.

Here is another web site (modern-greek-verbs.tripod.com/home.html) about conjugating modern greek verbs worth taking a look at.

Thank you for the suggestion. We will investigate all these other resources in order to make our site even better!

I totally agree with Jennifer!! The site is great, but verbs in greek are very tough. If you could develope a way to explain different times and conjugations it would be fantastic!!! I have to say that for me almost every branch of greek is difficult, starting with different modes like genitive, acusative…:)

      Thanks
      Miguel

Since you first started this site, I have been copying every word, pronunciation, and usage into a Word Doc along with the link to the “Sound File” or “Listen to the word”. The problem is this. In a previous version of your site, If I could not figure out the proper hyerlink, I could find it on your site (under properties for the word). With your present version, I can’t find that link when you may use a non-standard transliteration of the word. For example, generally the letter η becomes i, but sometimes h. the letter ω sometiomes is o, sometimes w. αι sometimes is ai, sometimes e. You are not consistent. Bottem line is I would like to be able to find the correct hyperlink somewhere on you web page. Possibly the link provided in the email could go directly to the sound file, rather than your daily word page, and the hyperlink would be available in the properties of the link.
    Thanks.

      Hello Ken.

We have actually received such a request in the past. This is simply, functionality that we didn’t think of when we initially laid out the new site. We can try to be more consistent in terms of using the same latin pronunciation for the definition and .mp3 file. However, it is not feasible for us to change out all the previous links.
For the time being, you can reference the http://www.greektionary.com/word-archive/ page for all the past .mp3′s. We have created a database table that includes all the words that have been featured on our website.

      Hope that helps.

What an awesome gift you provide, I look forward to it each day….having moved away from my Boston Greek-American family and with the passing of time and the immigrant elders, you keep me in touch with the language. thanks

I happened upon this site today and was very pleased to see your system of daily words, along with a phrase using the word, spoken slowly, then at speed.

    Very good!

Now to improve it, a little cartoon pix illustrating the phrase would get the visual memory working together with the auditory memory. The cartoon must be simple and direct. And must not introduce extaneous information unrelated to what is being learnt. I recommend, for examples, to consult the books of Theodore Papaloizos which are used to teach children to read Greek. He clearly understands the basics of language teaching, which, sad to say, few other courses do.

Right now I am working with Pimslaeur course II on CD which is also excellent, although again, there is no book with pictures to go with the audio. Unfortunately, Pimslaur stops after only 60 lessons which is not nearly enough to really get around in Greek.

We like your “diagram” idea Jock. We have actually discussed this addition in the past, but realized that we didn’t have the time to perform these enhancements.
However, we do want to add “concept” words such as colors, letters of the alphabet, numbers etc. These categories will have some pictures next to them.
We will be rolling something out beginning of next year.

I really look forward to the new words every day. Many thanks for that. Sometimes you even have a new photo. If it’s not too much work it would be nice to have a new daily photo. A good way to promote different parts of Greece.

    • Harry G. Dec 20, 2010 at 4:01 pm #

      Alexandra,

Thank you for the words of encouragement!
We actually started implementing “pictures of the day”, but we soon found out that we didn’t have enough pictures! :)
We have switched to a “picture of the week” idea.

By the way, we would definitely appreciate any picture submissions from anyone interested to share!

i like a lot this web i love languages.i think it would be good if we could download the mp3 thanks a lot

  7. Tom Dec 30, 2010 at 1:24 pm #

It would be nice if we could search for words that have been archived, but otherwise the site is perfect!

Hi. I found your site before a week and it is so useful for me. Thank you! And here is my suggestion to you: In my opinion it is easier to study Greek by putting all new words into flachcards – I am doing like this. I am using the site: http://www.flashcardmachine.com/my-flashcards/ where every day I put the three daily new words into flashcards. It would be nice if you can put all archive words into flashcards with the needed pronunciation.

I think it would be helpful if you could play all words of the day with one click. It would be even better if you could play all the words in a month and see the words with just one click.
And oh yeah, like blanco mentioned, what happened to the downloadable files?

I REALLY enjoy your site. I have found this free Google translator to be a helpful companion learning tool which I can embed in my iGoogle homepage: http://translate.google.com

Hi congratulations on a wonderful sight! My only comment is that if one misses a day and makes it up the following day, I am unable to open the sound link, is this my problem or is that the way the site has been designed.
    Kind regards,
    Diane Joannides

    • Harry G. Apr 14, 2011 at 8:36 pm #

      Dear Diane.

I just double checked the audio and it seems that everything is fine.
Words of the day only stay on the page for 1 day. They can subsequently be accessed through the archive section of the page. The mp3′s are also available there. If you click in an older email, you will be directed to the main page which displays the latest words and not the ones from the older email. Hope that clarifies things a bit.

      Harry.

    Χαίρετε Harry!
    Perhaps this problem has already come to your attention. At the web site, when one clicks on the ‘Word Archive’ label, the resulting display on the screen is ‘December 2011′ rather than the current month. Of course, we haven’t yet arrived at December, so the calendar shows no words at all. Previously, when one clicked the ‘Word Archive’ tab, the display automatically showed the whole list for the current month up through date on which the request was being made for ‘Word Archive’. Πώς μπορεί να αποκατασταθεί;
    Thank you! Geoff

    • Geoff Ross Jun 23, 2011 at 3:05 am #

      Hello again, Harry:
I myself am responding to the message I posted yesterday about the “Word Archive’ feature at the web site bringing up a blank calendar page for December 2011. As it turns out, this was happening only on my own computer, and it was caused by a shift in the date/time stamp registered in my computer. Somehow it had gotten changed from June to December 2011, and so my browser was behaving as if it were in December rather than in June — obviously a source of much confusion.
      Onward & upward!

    Hi

I’ve just discovered your website which is brilliant.

I’ve looked at some apps for iPhone attempting to do the same kind of thing which are rubbish.

Have you considered creating such an application?

At a Sunday lunch party in Ano Korakiana, Corfu, Katerina shows me how to make a Greek orange pie. Make sure it’s set in the middle – cook for longer if not. Easy to make and absolutely delicious! (Serve on its own or with cream or ice-cream.)

    Video with recipe on Youtube.

      Re. Katerina’s Orange Pie

      Don’t miss out the yogurt!

I’ve just watched the video again and found that an advert across the bottom of the screen made the instruction to add a small pot of yogurt very easy to miss.

The best yogurt to use is ‘Total’ 10% – one small pot.

This recipe makes a big pie that will serve about 20 people with reasonable sized portions.

      Enjoy!

Hi there, ny chance of seeing the English phonetic version of the ‘sample’ sentence? That would help me so much in understanding the whole Greek sentence!

    Thanx for considering, Sally

    ‘Beginner’ level word ‘diligent’.
    ‘Intermediate’ level word ‘apple’.
